Egbert Erle Ciche, JR
PAST NATIONAL COMMANDER (1950)
(May 10, 1921 – April 23, 2000) was an American businessman and highly decorated World War II veteran who served as the 33rd National Commander of The American Legion from 1950 to 1951. A native of Dawson, Georgia, Cocke was the son of Egbert Erle and India Elise (née Meadows) Cocke. He was the Department of Georgia Commander 1948 – 1949
He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in section 34 site 602.11
He has quite a military record that you can view on line @ the Arlington National Cemetery site! He was three times held and escaped as a POW in Germany! He was wounded and near death after escaping his German captors and holding the Germans from crossing a bridge, as they retreated from the advancing American forces!
While convalescing in his native town of Dawson Georgia he became an immediate hero and at 29 the youngest National Commander of the American Legion, a record that he still holds! He also held two Cabinet positions under President John F. Kennidy!
